Bosco della Fontana near Marmirolo (Mantua) is the finest surviving lowland Po plain forest in Italy — 236 ha of old-growth pedunculate oak (Quercus robur), with trees up to 300 years old and 40 m tall. The forest floor has wild garlic in April, and red squirrel, roe deer and 60+ bird species breed. Middle spotted woodpecker, lesser spotted woodpecker and black woodpecker all nest here.
