The Boschi di Carpeneto regional reserve near Ovada protects the finest surviving oak forest in the Monferrato hills — turkey oak, durmast oak and hornbeam on calcareous clay soils. The wood was historically the boundary between Genoa and Milan territories. Porcini are excellent in October. The reserve sits above the Gavi DOCG wine zone — an unusual pairing of old-growth forest and wine country.
