Riserva Abbadia di Fiastra, Macerata

The Riserva Naturale Abbadia di Fiastra near Tolentino is a WWF reserve of 1,800 ha centred on a 12th-century Cistercian abbey. The Cistercian monks maintained the forest carefully for 800 years — this produced one of the finest old-growth oak forest ecosystems in central Italy. The abbey church, cloister and farm buildings are still intact. Dogs are welcome in the forest reserve (not inside abbey buildings).
