The Pineta di Dante (Classense forest) near Ravenna was immortalised in Canto 28 of Purgatorio as the divine forest Dante entered before Paradise. Ancient stone pines (Pinus pinea) line the flat tracks between the Adriatic dunes and the Po delta wetlands. Dante spent his final exile in Ravenna and walked here daily.
