Porto Venere — Isola Palmaria

The Isola di Palmaria off Porto Venere is part of the UNESCO Cinque Terre World Heritage zone — connected to the coast by a short ferry. The island circuit (6 km) passes the Grotta Azzurra (Byron's Cave) and the WWI battery above the Gulf of La Spezia (the 'Gulf of Poets' — Shelley and Byron both lived on its shores). Wild rabbit and blue rock thrush on the island's cliffs. Dogs welcome.
