Populonia was ancient Etruria's only coastal city and the centre of iron smelting from ore brought from Elba. The Baratti gulf beach is still littered with iron slag from ancient smelting. A hilltop acropolis with 8th-century BC tomb mounds overlooks the sea. The forest walk through the Gulf of Baratti regional park is extremely beautiful.
