Pizzo Carbonara

At just under 1,980 metres, this bare karst summit is the highest point in the Madonie and the second-highest peak on the island after Etna. The upper slopes are pitted with sinkholes and dry stone fields typical of Mediterranean karst, opening to views stretching from the Tyrrhenian coast to, on exceptionally clear days, Etna's distant cone. Endemic Madonie fir, one of the rarest conifers in Europe, survives in isolated pockets on the lower slopes.
