Pizzo Arera

Lombardy

Pizzo Arera's grey dolomitic-limestone pyramid dominates the skyline above the Val Seriana and Val Brembana, its slopes honeycombed with karst sinkholes and caves still being explored by regional speleology clubs. The long approach climbs through pasture grazed since medieval times before a steep, scree-strewn final push to the summit ridge. Several plant species found nowhere else on Earth cling to its rocky crevices, including a rare bellflower first described here.
