Piano Grande di Castelluccio

Umbria

Piano Grande is a huge flat polje at 1,350 m ringed by the Sibillini peaks, farmed for the prized Castelluccio lentil. Every June the fallow strips erupt into the 'fiorita' — poppies, cornflowers and wild mustard in overlapping bands of color, visible from the rim road above. The 2016 earthquake damaged the hilltop village, but the plain itself and its walking tracks are untouched.
