Passo di Gavia, Stelvio National Park

The Passo di Gavia (2,652 m) is famous in cycling for the 1988 Giro d'Italia stage in a snowstorm — Andy Hampsten won. The pass is in Stelvio National Park with views to the Ortles (3,905 m) and Cevedale glacier. The summit plateau has two small glacial lakes. The northern approach road (Ponte di Legno side) is one of the steepest paved roads in the Alps. Dogs roam freely on the alp meadows.
