Piani del Pollino
Basilicata
These broad karst plateaus sit at around 1,800 metres between Serra delle Ciavole and Serra del Prete, dotted with dwarf mountain pines and seasonal sinkhole lakes. Free-ranging Pollino horses and cattle graze here through summer, and open sightlines make it a favourite for spotting golden eagles. The plains connect several trailheads used for the ascent to the ancient Loricato pines.
