Above Balme the valley opens into a wide gravelly flat where the Stura di Ala meanders between larch-dotted pastures and 3,000 m walls. Level paths cross the plain to springs, old herders' huts and the start of the harder climbs to Rifugio Gastaldi and the Ciamarella.
