Pian del Re
Piedmont
At the head of the Val Po, a modest spring emerges from a boulder field to begin its 650-kilometre run to the Adriatic, marked by a small plaque at Pian del Re. The trail continues up toward Rifugio Quintino Sella beneath Monviso's dramatic pyramidal summit, the mountain that gave its name to the entire Piedmont region. Golden eagles patrol the cirque and edelweiss grows on the drier southern slopes.
