Founded by the Visconti dukes as both a monastery and their planned mausoleum, the Certosa di Pavia's elaborately carved marble facade is among the finest examples of Lombard Renaissance architecture, standing somewhat incongruously in flat, open farmland a few kilometres from Pavia itself. The grounds around it are level and easy.
