Subiaco is where St Benedict of Nursia retreated to a cave above the Aniene river in 500 AD to found Western monasticism. The two monasteries (Santa Scolastica and San Benedetto) built above his cave are reached by a path through a gorge of spectacular limestone scenery. The Aniene river here is clear green and cold.
