The Parco Lombardo della Valle del Ticino south of Varese and Novara is the oldest regional park in Italy (established 1974) — the Ticino river in riparian poplar, alder and oak with kingfisher (nesting), black stork in spring migration, otter confirmed since 2015 (returning after decades of absence). The forest is remarkably wild given proximity to Milan. Dogs off-leash in most areas.
