Pino Loricato — Pollino Summit Ridge

The Pino Loricato (Bosnian pine, Pinus heldreichii) grows nowhere in Italy except the Pollino ridge, where ancient specimens exceed 1,000 years in age and survive at 2,200 m in ice, wind and poor soil. The ridge walk from Colle dell'Impiso crosses through 'dwarf forests' of these contorted ancient trees to Monte Pollino (2,248 m). The trees are the symbol of Pollino National Park and one of the oldest living organisms in Europe.
