The Piano di Gaudolino plateau above the Pollino ridge is the core of Italy's largest national park. The area has the world's most significant population of Bosnian pine (Pinus leucodermis) — a relict glacial species that grows in gnarled, storm-twisted forms above 2,000 m. Wolves and Apennine chamois are both present.
