Monte Pollino (2,248 m) is the highest peak in the Pollino national park, Italy's largest. The ancient Bosnian pines (pino loricato) on the summit ridge — some over 1,000 years old, twisted by millennia of storms — are considered sacred by local culture. Golden eagles and wolf packs roam the park.
