Parco della Pineta, Appiano Gentile
Lombardy
The Parco della Pineta covers 4,500 ha of lowland Scots pine and oak between Varese and Como. Ancient ghiacciaie (ice wells) cut into the soil collected winter ice to refrigerate Milan's food supply in the 18th century. Black and green woodpeckers drum through the forest; roe deer are common.
