The Bosco di Gallopane in the Sila Grande near Camigliatello is one of the most extraordinary forests in Italy — Calabrian black pines (Pinus nigra var. calabrica) estimated at 350 years old, with circumferences over 5 m. The forest feels primeval. Wolf packs cross regularly. Woodpecker species include black, great spotted and middle spotted. The Sila air is clean and cool even in August.
