Ghiacciaio del Calderone, Gran Sasso

The Ghiacciaio del Calderone on the north face of the Corno Grande (2,914 m) is the southernmost glacier in Europe — and one of the fastest retreating. In 1800 it was 34 ha; today less than 10 ha remain. The approach from Fonte Cerreto is a long climb through the Gran Sasso park to the moraines below the glacier. Apennine chamois are plentiful. A sobering climate record.
