The Foreste Casentinesi National Park on the Romagna side of the Apennine ridge protects the most extensive old-growth forest in Italy — silver firs (Abies alba) over 1,000 years old at Sasso Fratino (Europe's oldest strictly protected forest since 1959). Wolf pack. Golden eagle. The October deer rut is audible throughout the forest. Wildcat, roe and red deer all present.
