Established in 1999 to protect the coastline behind the five villages of Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore, the park is really a cultural landscape as much as a natural one — 18 centuries of dry-stone terracing built into near-vertical slopes for vines and olives. Trails link village to village along the cliffs and climb inland through the terraces to quieter ridge paths above, with far fewer crowds than the coastal path itself.
