Parco Naturale Paneveggio – Pale di San Martino

The Foresta di Paneveggio has supplied resonance-wood spruce to violin makers (Stradivari among them) for centuries, and still gives its name to the park that pairs it with the much wilder Pale di San Martino above — one of the largest high-altitude karst plateaus in the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage component. Red deer rut in the forest each autumn, and marked trails climb from the valley floor to the Pale's bare limestone tableland.
