Parco di Montioni, Follonica

Tuscany

Parco di Montioni near Follonica has a remarkable history — Elisa Bonaparte (Napoleon's sister, Grand Duchess of Tuscany) built a spa complex here in 1813, piping the hot springs to supply bathing facilities on Elba island for her brother. The spa ruins are now inside a Maremma oak and pine forest. Wild boar are so habituated they are seen in daylight. Golden oriole and nightingale nest in the forest.
