Aosta Valley
Mont Avic's acidic, serpentine bedrock — unusual in the largely limestone and granite Aosta Valley — supports a rare mix of Scots pine forest and peat bogs found almost nowhere else in the region. A network of trails links a chain of small glacial lakes, including Lago Blu and Lago Nero, whose dark, mineral-tinted waters give the park an unusually moody, northern-European feel. It remains one of the valley's least-visited protected areas despite its ecological importance.
