The Matese massif forms a wild, sparsely populated limestone plateau on the Campania-Molise border, its beech forests and high pastures holding one of southern Italy's more secure wolf populations. Karst features are everywhere — sinkholes, disappearing streams and the artificial Lago del Matese fed entirely underground. It's a much quieter alternative to the better-known Apennine parks further north.
