Parco dei Gessi Bolognesi — Grotte del Farneto
Emilia-Romagna
The Parco dei Gessi Bolognesi is a karst reserve formed in gypsum (selenite) rock — geologically exceptional and only 10 km from Bologna's city centre. The Grotte del Farneto contain Bronze Age human remains and tools (museum nearby). The gypsum caves host beetles endemic to this single park — species found nowhere else on earth. The white gypsum cliffs contrast with the surrounding Po plain vegetation.
