The Parco Gallipoli Cognato near Calciano protects one of the finest downy oak (Quercus pubescens) forests in southern Italy — 27,000 ha of ancient woodland on a high Lucanian plateau. Wolf and Apennine wildcat are resident. The abandoned hilltop village of Accettura inside the park hosts the Maggio festival (a tree-marriage ritual dating to pre-Christian times). Roe deer abundant.
