The Bosco della Mesola near Ferrara is the last example of the primeval coastal forest that once fringed the northern Adriatic. It holds the only wild red deer population on the Italian mainland — 200 individuals that have been isolated from the Alpine populations since Roman times and have developed slight genetic differences. Roe deer and wild boar also present. UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve.
