Parco delle Madonie

Rising to 1,979 m at Pizzo Carbonara, the Madonie massif holds relict stands of the Nebrodi fir (Abies nebrodensis), reduced to under 30 wild trees found nowhere else on Earth, alongside beech forest more typical of the Alps than Sicily. Stone villages like Petralia Sottana and Castelbuono ring the range, and Piano Battaglia and Piano Zucchi give access to the high plateaus where snow lingers into spring.
