The Riserva Naturale di Berignone in the Colline Metallifere near Volterra protects the upper Cecina river gorge — holm oak and strawberry tree cover the canyon walls. Otter is resident (confirmed tracks year-round). Golden eagle nests on the limestone outcrops. The reserve is almost completely unknown and has no visitor infrastructure. The river has natural pools for swimming in summer.
