Parco del Mincio — Mantova Lotus
Lombardy
The lakes of Mantua (Lago Superiore, Lago di Mezzo, Lago Inferiore) form a ring around the city created by the Gonzaga as defensive moats. Since the 1920s, sacred lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) has colonised the lakes — now Europe's largest spontaneous lotus colony, covering hundreds of hectares and blooming pink every July. The view from the city walls is extraordinary.
