Molise
The Matese massif above Campitello (1,434 m) is the highest mountain in Molise — a wide karst plateau with a winter ski area and summer walking. Wolf packs are resident; Apennine chamois was reintroduced here in 2010. Lago del Matese (1,011 m) freezes in hard winters — up to 5 km of ice. The plateau in summer has wild orchids and gentians.
