The Parco Naturale Regionale dei Monti Simbruini above Subiaco is the largest regional park in Lazio — 30,000 ha of Apennine beech forest with wolf (stable pack), Apennine chamois (reintroduced 2016) and golden eagle. The park is 60 km from Rome but completely wild. Subiaco below has the oldest Benedictine monastery in the world (founded by St Benedict himself in the 5th century).
