This regional park above Varese takes its name from the alpine meadows that bloom across its summit ridge each spring, but it's equally known for the karst caves beneath it, including one of Italy's deepest cave systems. A grand early-20th-century astronomical observatory and an abandoned Art Nouveau grand hotel crown the highest point, both slowly being restored. Beech forest cloaks most of the slopes, sheltering a healthy population of roe deer and badgers.
