The Parco Nazionale dell'Appennino Lucano-Val d'Agri-Lagonegrese protects the Agri river valley in the heart of Basilicata. The Agri is one of the few southern Italian rivers with a confirmed otter population — tracks found regularly near Marsiconuovo. The park has wolf, wild cat and the only Apennine chamois population in Basilicata. The valley forest is old beech and black pine.
