Monte Pietralata (1,109 m) on the Fabrianese Apennines is a quartzite ridge — geologically unusual in the limestone Apennines. The old chestnut forest on the approach is magnificent; some trees over 300 years old. The ridge gives views east to the Adriatic and west into the Umbrian plain. Porcupine, wild cat and wolf are all confirmed in the surrounding forest. Almost no tourist infrastructure.
