Pantano di Sessano
Molise
The Pantano di Sessano is a glacial peat bog at 1,050 m near Sessano del Molise — an extremely rare habitat type in the Apennines. The bog hosts sphagnum moss, carnivorous sundew (Drosera), bog asphodel and the Apennine population of common crane that has returned to breed here after an absence of 400 years. Cranes returned to breed in 2012 — the first documented nesting in the Apennines since the 18th century.
