Pantalica — Necropoli e Valle dell'Anapo

Pantalica is a UNESCO World Heritage site with 5,000 rock-cut tomb entrances cut into the walls of the Anapo and Calcinara gorges — the largest prehistoric necropolis in Europe. The tombs date from 1270–700 BC. The gorge below holds the river Anapo running clear over limestone; kingfishers, grey herons and terrapins inhabit the water. Byzantine cave dwellings reuse some of the Bronze Age tombs.
