The Pantalica necropolis (13th–7th century BC) contains over 5,000 rock-cut tombs in the walls of the Anapo river gorge. UNESCO-listed with Syracuse, it is the largest Bronze Age necropolis in the world. The river gorge walk passes Byzantine cave churches painted with frescoes and swimming holes in the clear Anapo river.
