This WWF-managed reserve protects one of the last extensive reed marshes in the Po plain's foothill lakes, a tangle of open water, sedge, and alder carr between Lago di Varese and Lago di Comabbio. Elevated boardwalks let visitors move through the marsh without disturbing nesting bitterns, a notoriously shy heron relative rarely seen elsewhere in the region. Otters have recently returned to the reserve's channels after decades of absence.
