Palmanova — the star fortress

Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Built from 1593 as Venice's bulwark against the Ottomans and the Habsburgs, Palmanova is a textbook Renaissance "ideal city": three concentric rings of walls, a hexagonal central piazza and radial streets. The outer bastions and dry moat form a green circuit you can walk right around.
