Monte Pellegrino, Palermo

Sicily

Monte Pellegrino rises directly from the sea north of Palermo in a 600 m limestone cliff wall. Goethe called it 'the most beautiful headland in the world.' The Santuario di Santa Rosalia on its flank marks the cave where Palermo's patron saint lived as a hermit; the pilgrimage path up dates from the 17th century.
