Oasi WWF Montedimezzo, Isernia

Molise

The Oasi di Montedimezzo near Vastogirardi in the Molise Apennines is one of the oldest WWF reserves in Italy (established 1971). The 340-ha beech forest hosts a European bison (żubrón) enclosure — the species was once native to the Apennines. Wolf tracks are found every winter. The reserve is on the Mainarde ridge at 1,200 m — entirely within walking distance of the village.
