Oasi Astroni, Napoli

Campania

The Oasi WWF degli Astroni is a volcanic crater (phlegraean field) inside the Naples urban area — a Bourbon royal hunting reserve from 1435 to 1860, now an intact mixed oak forest with three crater lakes. Grey heron colony (50+ pairs). Night heron. The old-growth oaks are over 200 years old — rare inside any Italian city. The Phlegraean Fields volcanic context means the ground is warm. Dogs on leash.
