Monte Ortobene (955 m) rises directly above Nuoro, the literary and cultural capital of Sardinia (Grazia Deledda, first Italian woman Nobel laureate, was born here). A paved road winds through cork oak forest to the summit Christ statue; walking paths fan out through the woods. The Redeemer festival is celebrated here on 29 August.
