Venice moved its glass furnaces to Murano in 1291, both to protect the city from furnace fires and to guard the secrets of Venetian glassmaking, a craft still practised by working furnaces visible from the island's canal-side paths. It's a flat, easy walk distinct from the busier calli of central Venice.
