Monte Morrone, Sulmona

Monte Morrone (2,061 m) above Sulmona is the hermitage mountain of Pietro da Morrone — the hermit monk elected Pope Celestine V in 1294 who resigned after only five months (the only voluntary papal abdication until Benedict XVI). His hermitage cave is at 1,100 m in the beech forest. The summit view encompasses the Peligna valley, Maiella and the entire central Abruzzo. Chamois on the upper ridge.
